SOFTWARE POSITIONS

Full-time, London UK
Start date: Jan 2019 (or earlier)
Salary: £50K - £60K (based upon experience)

GripAble Ltd is a multi-award winning technology startup developing a gamified mobile software platform to provide remote assessment and rehabilitation to people with brain or physical injuries. Rehabilitation programmes are critical for such patients, e.g. after a stroke, helping them regain their quality of life. However, for years therapists have struggled to find accessible tools that can engage patients. Our first product is GripAble™, an innovative digital hand-grip device that connects to our mobile app, allowing patients with hand and arm impairments to play engaging therapy games and interact with a community of others, suffering from similar disabilities, whilst in the comfort of their own homes. We are a spin-out of Imperial College London, now based in Shoreditch, who collaborate closely with clinicians, researchers and patients. We have raised money to scale our product globally, as well as recently receiving a prestigious 3-year NHS grant allowing us to build the world’s first social network & gaming platform specifically for people with disabilities.

The Role
- Experienced and ambitious software developer who wants to build innovative solutions that will help millions of physically impaired patients worldwide.
- To lead, by example, a (small) team of software and game developers.
- Apply your expertise in mobile, real-time web apps and cloud services.
- Architect and build from the ground up an innovative platform for remote mobile gaming and social interaction.
- Willingness to become a key member of the technical and management team.
- Passionate about technology and a strong desire for learning about and playing with the latest technologies.
- Takes pride in readable, elegant, well-tested and reusable code.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly-growing organisation.
- A desire to interact and learn from some of the world's leading experts in rehabilitation medicine as well as patients themselves.

Essential Skills
- Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Engineering, or related quantitative field.
- 4+ years of work experience as a full stack developer with superb programming skills across multiple languages (e.g. C#, Java, C/C++, Python and/or Javascript).
- Previous experience of leading a (small) software team including utilising sprint planning and Agile methodologies.
- Previous experience developing and scaling cloud solutions using, for example, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud/Firebase Platform.
- Previous experience developing cloud micro-services and real-time APIs.
- Knowledge of server-side scripting frameworks e.g. Node.js, Django and/or Flask.
- Knowledge of backend databases e.g. DynamoDB, MongoDB and/or RethinkDB.
- Ethical, with great teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable Skills
- Masters (or PhD) degree in Computer Science or relevant field.
- Previous experience developing native cross-platform mobile apps (Android and iOS).
- Previous experience developing games, working with games developers and/or the Unity platform.
- Experience handling sensitive patient data and an understanding of data governance issues.
- Experience working in a startup culture.

- End-to-end development of compelling 2D multiplayer games that motivate physically impaired patients to move and interact remotely with other patients/caregivers.
- To be an integral part of a (small) software team.
- Apply your expertise in game design, storyboarding and software development.
- To contribute to an innovative platform for remote mobile gaming and social interaction.
- Passionate about technology and design.

Essential Skills
- Bachelor Degree in game design, animation, graphics, computer science or related field.
- (1-2) years of experience working with the Unity game development platform or mobile game development in general.
- Strong programming skills (e.g. C#, Java and/or Python).
- Creative individual with a unique game design style (i.e. when designing sprites, animations and game narrative).
- Ability to storyboard & wire-frame game ideas to wider team.
- Highly proficient with 2D design packages (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop).
- A portfolio of previously developed (mobile) games.
- Ethical, with great teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable Skills
- Masters degree in game design or relevant field.
- Experience developing online multiplayer games.
- Experience working in a small Agile team and sprint planning.
- Experience designing and coding 3D games or animations.
- Experience in game or software testing (e.g. TDD, bug, functional, UX etc.).
- Experience working in a startup culture.

The Role

- Build, prototype, test and deploy early alpha versions of our innovative digital handgrip.
- Develop a custom calibration protocol and automated test rig for our patented grip force measurement system.
- Liaise with our early adopters and key stakeholders including UX testing and qualitative feedback sessions.
- To be an integral part of a (small) multidisciplinary team.
- To contribute to an innovative project centred on remote mobile gaming and social interaction delivered through our bespoke GripAble platform.
- Passionate about technology and design.

Essential Skills
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Robotics, Design, Electronics) or related field.
- 1+ years of experience working as an engineer.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software packages (e.g. Autodesk, Solidworks).
- Experience of electromechanical design and sensors (e.g. strain gauges).
- Enjoys hands-on work and building functional prototypes.
- Good programming skills (e.g. Matlab, C/C++, C#, Java or Python).
- Ethical, with great teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable Skills
- Masters degree in Engineering or relevant field.
- Experience developing electronic circuits and PCB (e.g. using Eagle).
- Experience of using load cells and/or strain gauge technologies including sensor calibration/characterisation.
- Experience developing simple algorithms e.g. processing of sensor data.
- Experience using tensile/compressive load test machines.
- Experience working in a startup culture.
